Eighteen people including families share what being transgender means to them, and the joy they have now being able to live fully as who they are.  From the challenges and hardships to the joys of living authentically, people from all ages and walks of life talk openly about their gender variant experience and the gift of transition.  From the youngest interviewee at 10 years old, to the oldest close to 70, trans youth, their parents, and adults shed new light on integrity, love, and authenticity in their lives.  Parents of trans children share insights about their own struggle to understand, and model what it means to love your child unconditionally.

In a field packed with films and media stories focused on the tragedy of being transgender, PFLAG's new film shows the healthy and fulfilling lives trans people live, and how humor and education can help build bridges and make allies.

You'll laugh, you'll cry -- you'll come away with a new understanding of the "T" in the "LGB..."

Narrated by Rev. Alicia Forde.

Followed by a panel discussion and reception.

1410 Quince Avenue in Boulder

General Admission: $5.00

Director: Wendy Jo Carlton
Starring Sharon Gless
(112 minutes)

"Cagney and Lacey" fans will remember the beloved Cagney character brought to life by a young Sharon Gless.  Long rumored to be a lesbian -- a few years on "Queer as Folk" will do that -- the Emmy and Golden Globe winning Gless brings her considerable talent to the role of Hannah, a 70-something, hard living, tough talking butch who lands back in her home town and then in an assisted living center when she breaks her leg.  Returning after years of on and off again absence, and on and off again time throughout her life with the woman who was her childhood love, Hannah discovers Rachel is also in the same residential center, but near death.

As she tries to talk Rachel's daughter into letting her visit before she dies, she recalls their past together in a series of flashbacks and an ongoing dialogue at her bedside with her sweetheart as a young woman and mother.  It's a touching retrospective of young love in the 40s and 50s, and how its resiliency carried both women over decades, separated by war, marriage and society's mores, and rejoined again and again by their love.

For those who've waited for Gless to come way out, you won't want to miss her bona fide career role as a woman loving woman.

Director: Javier Fuentes-Leon
(23 minutes, Peru, Spanish w/English subtitles.)

Winner of Sundance Film Festival's coveted World Cinema Audience Award for Dramatic Feature (2010), and a nominee for the Grand Jury Prize, this Peruvian film with its luxurious coastal cinematography will stay with you long after it's over.  In a tiny seaside village where traditions run deep, Miguel (Cristian Mercado), a young fisherman, and his beautiful bride, Mariela (Tatiana Astengo), are about to welcome their first child. Miguel is a hardworking, respected member of his community.  But he harbors a secret — he's in love with Santiago (Manolo Cardona), a painter, who is ostracized by the town because he's gay. After a tragic accident occurs, Miguel has to choose between denying his love for Santiago, or honoring it, and, in turn, revealing their relationship to Mariela — and the entire village.

Written and directed by Javier Fuentes-León, an out Peruvian filmmaker, and featuring a sizzling international cast, Contracorriente is rich in the details of legend, tradition, and locale, with a twist of the supernatural.
