"In protest, there must never be compromise: In politics, there is always compromise."

Picture of Bayard RustinBayard Rustin uttered these words later in his life, reflecting on the Civil Rights Movement's growth from boycotts and protest marches to the pillars of power in Washington, D.C. That road lead to enactment of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, giving African Americans the right to vote and -at least in law - to be free from discrimination.

Rustin's remarkable accomplishments include chief strategist of the Civil Rights Movement, recorded singer, labor organizer, and refugee advocate. "Brother Outsider" chronicles this extraordinary man's life and contributions, presenting him as both outsider to the Movement because of his sexual orientation, and consummate insider who was the key strategist working with President Lyndon Johnson to craft and then pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964. It was Rustin who understood best and implemented the changes needed within the Movement as tactics shifted from protest to political partnering. Rustin also was the pivotal figure who first linked the Civil Rights Movement to organized labor, and ultimately, the Democratic Party.

The film includes rarely seen footage from some of Rustin's leadership moments: planning the 1963 March on Washington; his historic 1962 debate with Malcolm X in which he advocated integration rather than separation from the white power structure; and, the following year, when he debated Stokely Carmichael over similar issues. Leaders of the Black Power Movement such as H. Rap Brown, Huey Newton, and Amiri Baraka all sound off against Rustin's steadfast adherence to the principles of nonviolence. A staunch follower of Ghandi, Rustin was known as even King's conscience on the issue.

Rustin's legacy and unique contributions to racial equality and GLBT rights in the U.S.
