Director, Ned Farr: 98 mins
For Boulderites hooked on Frequent Flyers, Ned Farr's "The Gymnast" puts a lesbian spin on the aerial dance magic they weave. It's "Desert Hearts" meets Cirque du Soleil -- complete with coming out intrigue, stifling soon-to-be-ex-husband, and lots of beautiful silky high flying by two of the most fit and beautiful women to grace the film skies.
A top gymnast, Jane Hawkins, loses her game because of life events and injury, and never gets to fulfill her Olympic dream. Instead, for almost twenty years, she has worked as a massage therapist while slowly disappearing in a passionless marriage. In an attempt to give meaning to her life, she has been secretly trying to get pregnant, against her husband David's wishes. Though still in peak condition, she may have waited too long to have children.
A chance meeting at a gym brings Jane a new opportunity as an athlete: an invitation to take her gymnastics skills to the air with an aerial troupe.
Start the intrigue: also recruited to be part of the act is an enigmatic dancer named Serena. When events conveniently force the coach out of the project, Jane and Serena attempt to put the act together themselves, and in the process, fall in love (who wouldn't, dangling together up in those silk things). The next thing you know, suddenly Jane's husband wants to have children, so she has to choose between having a child with him, or creating a completely new life for herself -- back in her game and in love. (Hmmm, let's see, which should she choose?)
The film's luxurious cinematic style makes it one you won't want to miss on the big screen: hard to describe the evocative feeling this film and its music create. Beautiful silk, beautiful women, beautiful dance, as they fly between the silk and complications of their lives.
"The Gymnast is a drama with a rare kind of beauty and power. Seldom before has a movie about middle age and sexual confusion brought with it such a tangible sense of longing and realism without losing its sense of humor.... As an examination of sexual awakening and the complications that arise, The Gymnast is unmatched. "

"The Gymnast" delivers emotional intensity in tastefully spectacular wrappings."
